To celebrate the new Harry Potter movie and book coming out, Borders will not only stay open late but will also turn Ellsworth drive into some Harry Potter fantasy land pinned the “Grand Hallows Ball” with free wands for all. AFI theater will also be holding a Harry Potter Movie Marathon all damn week long starting on July 16th - 21st.
Yet another coffee shop is opening up in downtown. The Crescent Condo is filling that scant ground floor retail space with the “Crescent Caféâ€; was this the best they could do? It doesn’t seem right with Kefa Café directly behind and a Starbucks a hop and a skip away from these people. With such a name I’m not even sure if it qualifies as a small business, it sounds crafted by the developer.Art Wall Community Involvement EventWhen: July 20, 4-8 pm.Where: Gateway’s Heliport Gallery -

The Piano Society of Greater Washington presents a recital of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and others, Sunday, July 29 at 3:00 pm. This is a benefit concert for a breast cancer fund that helps needy patients who could not otherwise afford treatment. Please bring the family; all are welcome. Stay for a wonderful reception. Peterson has issued a new photographers policy in a communtiy discussion at the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board Meeting yesterday and they are also in the process of creating more policies to address other issues like protesting and political affairs. I know people are tired of reading about this but to quote,
“We Welcome photography, videography and other filming at our Center. We permit all of these activities , as our patrons and tenants are neither harassed nor photographed or filmed over their objection. Also, any activity which would interfere with pedestrian or vehicular movement requires advance management approval. We continue to encourage patrons to report inappropriate behavior to police and security personnel. We reserve the right to modify this and other policies.”
Robb Parker, Property Manager with Peterson Management and I.J. Hudson and Jack Garson of Garson/Claxton LLC Law Firm of Bethesda were part of a Q&A session in front of the Advisory board.
According to Gary Stith, Director of Silver Spring Regional Center, it looks like most of land under the downtown project was leased to Peterson/Foulger Pratt/Argo Investments by the County with an option to buy. I had a feeling the County was smarter than to just give it away.

I thought a pharmacy was supposed to open at the Crescent. Also, “Crescent Cafe”? What a lame name.
Pharmacy? Where did you hear that? There’s a sign in window for the Cafe, they may have room for a Pharmacy but it wouldn’t be too big.
A few months ago, I attended a chamber of commerce mixer. Nice people, lame food.
While there, Mel Tull, of the regional center, and a gentleman from Adams Bank (don’t remember his name) told me that a pharmacy chain had just signed the lease to Crescent’s retail space. (They wouldn’t say which chain.)
If the Crescent Cafe was crafted by the developer, as you suggest, then it’s possible the drug store opted out. It does sound like the developer is trying to reap some financial benefit from the space.
Actually the bike race WAS held last year. If you need proof, just look at the sign on the Discovery building for the ‘06 Silverdocs.
You’re right, how time flys.
More coffee shop competition is always good by me…I love Kefa, but Highland is much larger and brighter with free wifi…perhaps this new cafe will be better?
Silver Springer: it’s how time flies, not flys. Must be slippery fingers.

>>The Grand Prix of Silver Spring cycling race will once again take place July 22nd from 8:00am to 12:00pm in downtown. I don’t think it was done last year
What I meant to say is that I thought it did not take place last year but the year before. My mistake.
I was at the crescent the other day looking at buying one of those places, and I ran into the gentleman who is setting up both the cafe and the pharmacy. He is by trade a pharmacist, and also has ambitions of running a cafe (family business, maybe). Anyway, he seemed like a nice guy. I will see if I can get some of the blue pills with my cafe.
The Silver Spring Grand Prix is a blast. Last year, it was held the final day of SilverDocs (and on Father’s Day). There is a Kid’s Race, too. So, it can be fun for the whole family.
