Rangers’ devastating injury could still have a summery silver lining

Rangers count the cost of a season-ending injury to Alfredo Morelos, with the loss to Celtic summing up just how important the Colombian is to the club.

The 25-year-old striker has undergone thigh surgery and will not return to the squad until pre-season, which is a monumental blow to the club’s chances at domestic and European level.

For some reason, even with Morelos injured, management insists on playing in a forward-friendly way despite Rangers not having a suitable back-up and if Alfredo’s absence doesn’t make us no harm, that lack of flexibility almost certainly will.

Next up is the Europa League quarter-final with Braga and without Mr Thursday Night, nerves are frayed around the clash.

But while our talisman’s injury is a blow to Rangers, could there still be a silver lining?

Could Alfredo Morelos’ injury boost Rangers’ contract hopes?

Much has been said about the contract situations of Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent before the summer.

Of the three, Alfredo Morelos would probably be the player most Rangers fans want to sign up after ultimately disappointing campaigns from the other two.

Ryan Kent has impressed in Europe but his lack of goals on home soil has cost the club this season while Joe Aribo has been one of the most criticized following the loss to Celtic.

The Nigeria international hasn’t kicked a ball for the club since January.

If they both continue with Rangers recouping the transfer fee, but if Alfie were to leave, the current situation highlights just how much of a chasm there would be on the Rangers side.

Due to injury, Alfredo Morelos may have to continue to prove his fitness before he can earn a move elsewhere, which could work in Rangers’ favor in terms of a new contract.

The club are hoping to sign Alfredo to a new deal to strengthen their position with the striker while Morelos have a club at Rangers who will support him in recovering from a serious injury.

It means the problem could still result in a new contract for Morelos at Rangers – even if it’s just a two-year extension – as he recovers from this serious thigh problem.

Meanwhile, a popular former Rangers star has been left ‘frustrated’ as he has to wait for his Premier League debut.
